Will Curve Fever 3 have an in-game shop?

“Will Curve Fever 3 have micro transactions?” - I get asked this question a lot by our players. And shortly after, they state: “I hope not, I hate micro transactions!”

I totally understand the feeling players have against micro transactions. Micro transactions are often implemented in such a way that they force players to buy stuff, or else progression will be near impossible. Developers often have the idea that they make the game for free and, therefore, they can bully the players into buying stuff. This is something you see a lot in mobile games, like Dungeon Keeper for mobile for example. But this is not how we want to make our game.

Alt text Yeah thanks Satan

Clearly, a game can’t exist without making money. If a game doesn’t make money, the developers can’t support it and you will need to wait a long time for new features. There might not be any space in the budget to support a community or find cheats and exploits. And in the end there are 5 developers working on Curve Fever every day who we would like to keep on board.

A totally free game is not an option, but what are the options? Let’s first define our goals:

  • Let free players have a great experience
  • Don’t lock away cool content for paying users only
  • Don’t destroy the virality factor of the game
  • Don’t make it ‘Pay 2 Win’
  • Let it make enough money so that 5 developers can support the game in the future

Let’s have a look at our options

Downloadable game

By most this is seen as the most ethical approach. But frankly speaking it is a bit strange. You pay 10 euros up front to play a game, of which you don’t know if you will like it or not. For Curve Fever this is definitely not an option as our game must be possible to be played for free. The game is mostly played in schools. So for us to increase the ‘time to play’, by making the player make a transaction to start playing, would be a bad idea. This would most certainly kill our virality factor.

But Geert, can’t you make a free part AND a paid part? We could do this, but then the amount of people who pay for the game will be relatively small. Thus you need to wait a long time for a game to start and have a smaller fraction of the players with whom you can compete with. Also non-paying players won’t have access to all the cool content. Ideally you want your non-paying players to be content for your paying players, but in this approach you totally split them from each other.

Ads

But Geert, maybe ads? Especially those ads where you get coins for when you watch them? In this question there are 2 suggestions: what about ads, and what about ads in combination with an in-game shop? Well, the truth about ads is that they don’t earn a lot. It would be possible to run a game on ads if you keep it simple and provide no support to the players. We want to make a high quality game so ads are not going to cover the costs.

Now, there is a trend to let people get coins by watching ads. Those coins they can spend in an in-game shop. It is considered fair as the players feel like they earned those coins, and players will start watching a massive amounts of ads. But, frankly speaking, it still isn’t enough to cover the costs.

Subscription, a.k.a. Premium

Curve Fever 2 was built with Premium in mind. In the end we find this model very hard to work with. To make people want to buy premium we have to offer them something. Therefore we made a lot of the cool features only accessible to premium players. This made a split in the community: premiums and non-premiums. Many of our free players still don’t know about the cool features of Curve Fever 2, like the hooked power-up or team play.

In-game shop

An in-game shop can be implemented in many ways. If you look at our goals, an in-game shop is the best fit, if done right:

  • Let free players have a great experience
  • Don’t lock away cool content for paying users only
  • Don’t destroy the virality factor of the game
  • Don’t make it ‘Pay 2 Win’
  • Let it make enough money so that 5 developers can support the game in the future

Alt text Crazy customization! An in-game shop, in essence, are a nice way of earning money, but it should be done correctly. First of all it allows a game to be played for free. Secondly it allows players who actually like your game to support your game in a way they want to. And thirdly players can spend as little or as much as they want on the game.

Of course micro transactions have been used by many developers in a wrong way, trying to force players to start paying or else they can’t progress, or by forcing players to buy stuff or they can’t compete. They make the mistake that they try to sell stuff on a negative feeling. In the end, the buyer does not feel good about their purchase. We don’t want to do this. We want the buyer to have a good feeling when they spend their money.

These are the ideas we have which can be bought by real money, or by in-game earned coins. They are:

  • Crazy sick skins for your curve
  • Crazy sick avatars for your personality
  • Cool powerups that you can select in quick play or custom play (everyone can pick them up though)
  • Tournaments, in which you can actually win something cool
  • A coin drop that you can drop in a game, in which all players can pick them up.

All of these items are fun to buy and provide a lot of diversity and options for the players. We think that we will manage to stay true to our goals, while also making the possibility to earn enough money for our team and thus bring you a great game.

I think tournaments just like Hearthstone arena should be open to some minus fee (or its coin equivalence) fiat currency always work.

Main problem being CF player base is young and don't have access to payment methods besides asking their parents. I'm not even sure CF track birthdates. (Which might be a good idea for better estimates?)

What's the current ratio of premium to non premium? 0.2%-0.5% ?

In counter strike kids have to trade items from the smallest value until they reach the most valued item. (At least it keeps them playing until they achieve that goal, and can't leave after because of how much they invested) while working people just go straight to the store, only for aesthetics items.

On the other hand maybe CF3 will buzz like agar.io (Which I hope every day in my bed while holding my teddy bear) and provide a more mature / cashflow efficient player base, but I know you can't really base your business model on the expectation of "going viral".

@sashaZR your questions:

1: Progress: We have some setbacks, to be honest. That is why I am now more focussing on programming than on writing blogs and stuff. We hope to still bring a great core game of CF3 in march, but some of the more advanced features will come later.

2: Clans: This is such an advanced subject that most likely suffers from our delay

3: Official tournaments: Those will become open to everyone, given a small fee. Also we would like to give ingame items as rewards.

Interesting, you might be on the right track with micro.

One question though, are you resigning from CF2? As in no more updates and content etc.?

@mini, thank you for the compliments!

We have to choose on which game to focus. Therefor CF2 will stay, but will only receive updates for critical issues (like hacking possibilities, etc.) We believe that CF3 will be way more interesting than CF2

I am quite sure. Microtransaction in CF3 and me and a lot of my friends will quit the game. I am talking just about my 5 real friends. Then we have friends from CF, others 10 people.

The end of Curvefever is coming soon .... Smile so bad

the first game i am playing for years

Hey Cornello, I think you are misunderstanding about what we mean with "microtransactions".

Currently in the CF2 shop, you can buy items with coins, this will be the same in CF3, and is what we are calling the micro transactions.

Yes, there are microtransactions too at the moment.

You can buy some coins for real money to buy nice stuff as colors and icons ingame. Your other option is to play long time and earn the coins (i guess its 1 coin/minute).

As i understand Geerts text, it will not be different in cf3. Only the offer will be a bit different (not only icons/colors to buy).

I like the idea of microtransactions when it is also possible to get THE SAME things by playing a lot Smile

Firstly, I just want to point out that you guys are doing a great job with cf3.

I've thought about which changes there will come, regarding how you'll make money out of this game, and the word microtransaction just annoyed me. I don't know how many games which i've quit because of it, and i'm not talking about the way the game is atm but how you guys will "offer premium players more". I've seen games where they've seperated the kind of coins you can use to buy something in an in-game shop, or even made it impossible for someone who didn't have some sort of "premium" to get Dirol stuff.

Well, if i've understood it right, these are some of the benefits for people using money on this game:

  • Crazy sick skins for your curve

-Does this mean that players who aren't premium won't be able to get this? Or will you               include these skins for players who buy premium as some kind of "bonus" ?

  • Crazy sick avatars for your personality

          -Same question as above.

  • Cool powerups that you can select in quick play or custom play (everyone can pick them up though)

-Basically this is a benefit which also is in cf2, and I personally think, that's the best                    benefit of buying premium.

  • Tournaments, in which you can actually win something Dirol

          -Also same as cf2, gr8.

  • A coin drop that you can drop in a game, in which all players can pick them up.

-I'm not sure what this is about, mind to explain it a bit?

One of the factors I really like about cf is how it's still funny to play even though you don't spend alot of money into the game, and how you're able to get anything you want from the shop if you're just playing enough for it. If you're concerned about making people buy premium, I think you should consider adding a "bonus", such as choosing whatever color you like from the in-game shop or avatars etc. Please don't ever lock away anything from the in-game shop for people who's not able to use real life money on the game. Freely buying whatever you want is what makes the game awesome and different from other games i've played.

I hope cf3 will satisfy our expectation, the layout looks sick though keep up the good work!

There won't be premium. It separates the community. I think the point is you can use "micro transactions" to get anything you want, when you want.

I think this is going great, my only hope is that for CF3 tourneys will be open for non-prems. I wouldn't mind having a fee to pay (as long as it's reasonable), I just want to be able to access everything that money-spenders can, if I play enough. Keep going! Biggrin
