'CF mentors' - your thoughts?

Hey guys,

Had an idea pop into my head this morning and figured I would see what you guys (the community) think of it. The idea is based on "mentors" and "students", so to speak.

So basically this will allow you guys, the players, to make an active contribution to the CF community. The pro players of this game tend to only play with other pros. But wouldn't it be nice to have more pros?! So if a pro player had to volunteer to do a sort of 'buddy system' and a new CF player (or someone of low skill level) was interested in learning the pro moves, then the pro could be assigned a 'student'.

Advantages:

  • Current players can make an active contribution to the community
  • Lower end players can have someone to look up to, more pros maybe!
  • Make more friends, socialise
  • Less grouping based on skill level

I'm sure there's more, but I'll let you guys tell me what you think of it Smile Maybe there could even be a student+mentor tournament :DD

I see you are trying to keep game alive due to fall in popularity. You should do something with trolls then, because they effectively ruin fun in this game. The whole fight about rank also ruins fun. Losing in this game is much more painful than in any other game, even more if trolls laugh at you when you lose, even more if they are second accounts and you lose even more rank. Yeah, you have to have strong nerves to play this game Blum 3

on topic...
Yeah, you can tell to someone how to help your team, that he shouldn't ruin space in camp,  but I'm not sure if you can really teach someone anything else.
You can't teach someone how to pass through small holes and do hard ways, because it needs practice and only practice and no teacher can accelerate this process.
But yeah, if you play a few games with new player, then you can show him that this game can be Dirol and it may encourage him to stay here for longer. But if you tell him how much time he will need to become pro, he may give up Biggrin

You want that people spend their time teaching others how to play a snake game?

@Haru. - This is purely by choice. The pros have their own little circle and nobody else gets in - if they don't wanna volunteer then that's fine. I just think new players will be more keen to stay/get better if they make friends with the best (instead of being kicked from every high room). Why so negative all the time man?...

@ReaLove - It's not so much about making them pro instantly, it's perfectly logical this can take time. It's more a social thing, so peaking people's interest and BUILDING a better community. I see your points though!

What would those 'students' be taught? You acquire skill in this game by practicing and practicing, not by a few tips given by someone in the top league (which may be useful, but might as well be written down as a Get Started guide then).
I've played enough games with new people to know that playing with someone completely new is frustrating for both parties. The mentor is held up by the student and sooner or later the fun of teaching is gone, and the student gets frustrated because he hasn't got the coordination needed to play the game yet.

What you are saying is sometimes completely true PotatoNL! People's limits are unavoidable and I can't argue with that.

The "teaching" is only one part of the idea though. Sometimes simply playing some games can do wonders. What do you think of the social aspect? Making friends and 'opening up' the community gives a good impression in my opinion.

Agreed, in regard to creating bonds and making friends this idea sounds fine. If the mentor and student get along fine, skill is a gap that can (partially) be bridged.
I like it, but how would you implement it into the game? New people don't usually check out the forum, so a topic here wouldn't suffice I suppose.

Make an extra spot ingame where you can see the "online mentors", so everyone can join him/her and ask her if he wants to help ;).

That is one solution.

What we are proposing is a kind of academy for low ranking players?

if so it seems a good idea for new stronger players

CF2 will soon be replaced by CF3. Implementing it in the game for these few months would be a waste of effort IMO.

spoileralert!

Advice from top pro player:

If I want my snake to turn right, I click right button.

If I want my snake to turn left, I click left button.

And you must touch no lines (including yourself) plus the walls (except an item allows to).

There's nothing more to the game.

Have fun getting better with those advice.

What if...

We had a special tab at the bottom for those who signed up for being 'mentors'.

And a simple 'Get A Mentor' button for new players with less than ex. 100 plays.

Bascially any player with less than 100 plays can press the button and all 'Mentors' online will receive a notification in the special tab where it shows the 'student's' username, which any 'Mentor' can accept, etc...

Just a scratchy idea

This game's luck based, if you have skills or not doesen't matter :c

Haters never quit, and quitters never hate.

I would possibly count as a student level person (not to the extent of Bodalee's example).

It seems to me that premium is already required to play unranked games (in my limited knowledge of curve and premium perks). How about more unranked games and not require adds or coins to play them? If a pro didn't mind playing with lower level players then it wouldn't affect their rank or need to add friends and noobs wouldn't need to add the host or use their limited number of coins.

Note: I played a couple of games with Martix and male chauvenist pig yesterday in a lobby just like this.

Exactly what is the measurement for pro and noob?

1500+ EU - Pro

1500- EU - Noob?

I'm almost there.......just totally underranked, but I have 1400 skills.

I strongly disagree with that and I'm sure there's a lot of people willing to learn and willing to teach. By seeing someone watching you can really help him improve, the same way pros on other games watch their own replays and share them with their teams so the team can comment on the mistakes made to help them improve.

Sure when you die you think stuff like "Omg why didn't I take this hole". But when taking a step backward your mistake might have been 10 or 15 seconds before, when you had a bad trade with X or didn't react fast enough to Y beeing pushed.

The main thing people at lower rank miss is not the passing through holes, but the confidence they can do it. Because nobody rewards them or encourages them when they take very good decisions (mainly because they don't realise they acted on a very good decision) that should be encouraged to reproduce.

I believe there is a lot more to teach in teams than FFA. And every match is different and results as an occasion to learn.

I agree, but having a mentor might cut the learning curve by a lot of time. Imagine if you had RealMadrid as a mentor a bit after you started.

I think this is a great idea. To find mentors and students, you could use a similar style to the Quickplay function. You can choose if you want to be student or mentor. If you choose student, it should say "finding mentor" and the available mentor and yourself will be placed in a room to play? I don't know although I really like this idea.

Mentors could also earn coins? But this could be exploited so there should be ways of making that difficult.
