Performance improvements in Curve Fever 3

During our technical test, we found out we had big performance issues. Many people were barely able to run the game. This called for great action from our side, as explained in this post.

Therefore we decided to take this matter seriously. We went to our neighboring game company, Split Polygon. They are making a space game where you can build your own space ship. The game is called Interstellar Rift.
We asked them: “Do you have a terrible laptop for us to test our game on?”
And they said: “Sure! This laptop is just able to run our game on 320x240 pixels.”
“Great!”

The laptop is a 4 years old laptop with a HD Graphic 3000 graphics card. According to our statistics it is the worst mainstream graphics cards our users are using. This is how it looks like:

It was slooow! Our game was running on 10 fps with only 1 curve being drawn.

But our programmers steadily made progress and finally they could bring the framerate up to…

60 fps is reached when you play with 1 curve only. When you play with 8 players the framerate still dips till 40 fps. Nevertheless, this is a very workable start from where we can keep on improving. Most importantly, almost all of our players will be able to enjoy the new Curve Fever. And that is great news, of course!

If you can't make a program that displays 8 lines on the screen that runs on today's computer you are seriously retarded. This could be done in the 80s.

But then again, games in the 80s didn't have any form of networking either. Or worked in a browser, especially since the web was only first conceptualized in 1990.

The main issue in the case was the use of a high level of antialiasing that was bogging down the slower machines. They tried to not only "just" draw the snakes, but have them have smooth edges as well. The method that was used for this simply required too much from certain GPU's.

Bro I tottally agree with the guy above. I have a crazy old laptop just played two games was laggin about like my line was an ice hockey puck.

I had a look at that company you mentioned Geert is all thier stuff for costing $$$?  Curve fever 3 is aimed at kids right why not look at online games that have a lag affect on your game like this one I used to play years ago. Still the same laptop and internet I had then, you can play this game for free too was good when i was younger, you can obviously buy added extra's but you get  lots free, target audience for CF3 right?   Wouldn't it be more sensible to look at partnership with a games company like that or am I missing something?

Great work! I'm really eager to see how the end result looks like Blum 3

And BTW, I found some typos in your "Performance improvements in Curve Fever 3" post that you might want to correct so the post is perfect:

  • Instead of "people where barely able to run the game", write "people were barely able to run the game".
  • Also, instead of "Therefor we decided to take this matter seriously", write "Therefore we decided to take this matter seriously".

Finally, is there a way to test the new technical preview?

@avm, thank you for the nice words and the help on our spelling. We fixed it.

At this moment we are working hard on the game, and when we have added something to test, we will invite you over again. If you want to talk with us sometimes, please look into our discord channel

Really hyped for CF3, and thanks for thinking about my computer!

Also, at the very last sentence "And that is off course great news!" you might want to correct it to "And that is great news, of course!" (Sentence positioning is wrong and it should be of, not off)

Proud to be a member, I'm glad to be able to help with the tribunal!

Hi RobynJuno,

No problem, your computer is very dear to us. And thank you for correcting my spelling. I feel like the article becomes more and more a crowd sourced article, and that is great!
